Top 10: Revenge Horror Movies

Watching a revenge horror movie is like eating sweets: it’s so baaad but so goooood! I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like watching revenge movies; they give ideas how to be mean to your bullies from the past. Maybe I am a bad person, but I believe in revenge and people should get what they deserve. Vengeance travels around all film genres, from action (Kill Bill), adventure (The Count of Monte Christo), thrillers (The Crow) and dramas (Confessions - which was, by the way, one of the best movies I watched last year, so give it a go). But the genre of vengeance that is the most enjoyable is without a doubt horror; where you can enjoy the torture of the villain and smile because justice is being made. If you feel the same way then you’re probably a sick person yourself, like me.

With that being said, let’s just look at the list and I hope you will find a film you will enjoy.

10. The Tortured (2010)

Director: Robert Lieberman
Writer:Marek Posival
Cast: Erika Christensen, Jesse Metcalfe, Bill Lippincott

I’m a fan of torture porn and Erika Christense (do you remember her in “Swimfan”?), when I saw the trailer of “The Tortured” I knew I will enjoy it. If you are a parent and some asshole kidnaps and kills your baby, you surely will turn into a sadistic animal. Expect a lot to happen!

9. Hard Candy (2005)

Director: David Slade
Writer: Brian Nelson
Cast: Patrick Wilson, Ellen Page, Sandra Oh

This movie was so good I watched it few times. If you really want to watch something refreshing don’t even bother to watch the trailer, just watch ‘Hard Candy’ without any expectations. I’m just going to say, men won’t enjoy some parts of the film…

8. The Last House on the Left (1972)

Director: Wes Craven
Writer: Wes Craven
Cast: Sandra Peabody, Lucy Grantham, David Hess, Richard Towers

I LOVE 70’s horror movies, they have the best trailers and catch phrases like “to avoid fainting keep repeating, it’s only a movie… only a movie… only a movie…” But it’s not the only moment you will laugh. The final scenes are so good, they cannot be forgotten! To top it up, the soundtrack is beautiful and made by David Hess (plays Krug in this movie) - the movie villain himself. The contrast of the happy music with the happening tragedy is strange but interesting.

7. I spit on your grave (2010)

Director: Steven R. Monroe
Writer: Meir Zarchi, Stuart Morse
Cast: Sarah Butler, Jeff Branson, Andrew Howard

Powerful man-hating movie with great acting and bloody scenes. At some point you will question supporting the raped woman… At least I did.

6. Irreversible (2002)

Director: Gaspar Noe
Writer:Gaspar Noe
Cast: Monica Bellucci, Vincent Cassel, Albert Dupontel

A French thriller with unforgettable scenes you will never shake off your mind. You can find this movie in top 10 French horror movies as well.

5. Martyrs (2008)

Director: Pascal Laugier
Writer: Pascal Laugier
Cast: Morjana Alaoui, Mylene Jampanoi, Catherine Begin

A brilliant and unique extreme French horror which could have made the top 3, if the whole story was about a revenge. The film develops into a journey where you will question the point of humanity. Next to ‘Irreversible’, you can find ‘Martyrs’ in Top 10 French horror list

4. Inside (A l’interieur) (2008)

Director: Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury
Writer:Alexandre Bustillo
Cast: Beatrice Dalle, Alysson Paradis, Nathalie Roussel

Similar theme as in ‘The Tortured’ but taken to the next level of gore! Click to see Top 10 French Horror list for more extreme gore.

3. Oldboy (Oldeuboi) (2003)

Director: Chan-wook Park
Writer: Garon Tsuchiya, Nobuaki Minegishi
Cast: Min-sik Choi, Ji-tae Yu, Hye-jeong Kang

Probably one of the best movies I have ever seen with many twists. Any movie that has Min-sik Choi becomes a must watch masterpiece. It is apparently being remade by Americans… *facepalm*

2. Dead Man’s Shoes (2004)

Director: Shane Meadows
Writer: Paddy Considine, Shane Meadows
Cast: Paddy Considine, Gary Stretch, Toby Kebbell

Heart breaking and disturbing British thriller about brotherly love. Remarkable.

DRUMROLLS

1. I saw the devil (Akmareul boatda) (2010)

Director: Jee-woon Kim
Writer: Hoon-jung Park
Cast: Byung-hun Lee, Min-sin Choi, Gook-hwan Jeon

So, you’ve seen the trailer and got excited? You have every right to fangirl over ‘I Saw the Devil’. The movie delivers blood, drama and action; this will satisfy the hunger of the most picky horror fans.

I’m sure the list will have to be changed in the near future, because vengeance theme is still as popular as years ago. I hope I will be able to watch more of excellent Korean movies soon.
